Chapter Twenty-Four

“Why did Crum intercept you before we got back in the car? Noticed I wasn’t invited to listen in.” I pouted as Fab turned onto the highway.

“Since when do you wait for an invite? Instead of waiting in the car, you could’ve been eavesdropping.”

“That’s whatshisname.” I tapped her arm. “The white Lexus. Turn right.”

“We already suck at remembering names; you start calling them that, and we’ll never remember another one.”

“You’re the one with the name issue,” I reminded her. “Don’t lose the car but don’t make it obvious we’re tailing him.”

“That’s rich coming from Ms. Slowpoke.” Fab revved the engine. “Who do you think you’re giving driving tips to? You need to tell me what’s going on before I hang a U-turn.”

“You better not or I’ll push you out and you can walk home.” Her laugh conveyed good luck. “That was Mr. Fake Name, and maybe Keely’s in that car. I wasn’t able to get a good look.”

“We’re about to catch up, and then what? I run him off the road?”

“If I was sure Keely wasn’t in the car… Interesting that he swapped cars.” I leaned up against the dash, staring at the road ahead of us.

“Just going by his house, he’s got enough money for a second car. That way, depending on his mood, he has a choice of which one to hop into.”

“My alternate ride is a beater pick-up. Which reminds me, we need to take it out for a spin so the engine doesn’t dry up.” I knew Fab was rolling her eyes.

“You need a reminder that my guy keeps the beater in shape so it’s ready to go last-minute.”

“The same kid that creeps around and keeps the cars spit-shined?” I asked.

“He’s not a kid. And I catch him spitting on any of the paint jobs, and he’s fired.” One task Fab had gladly taken over was the maintenance of the cars and trucks, and no one complained.

“Look—the liquor store.” I jabbed my finger as the Lexus turned into the parking lot.

We turned in behind the man, parked, and watched as Dick Meadows—if that was his real name, which I doubted—chose an end space and got out. The passenger door opened, and Keely got out and trailed after him at a snail’s pace. Meadows turned and snapped something, and she hustled to catch up, staying an arm’s length away.

“Here’s the plan, if you can call it that: I’m going to confront them when they come out and get some answers. You’re going to stay on the alert to make a quick getaway.” I opened the door, one foot out.

“You do know that if you kidnap Keely—and that’s what it would be even if she comes willingly—you’re going to jail?” Fab said testily.

“I just want answers. If it turns out to be a family issue, then fine; I can let it go.” I closed the door while Fab was still fuming. I moved to the front of the store and leaned back against the building, Meadows’ car close by.
